Hi there,
Fibromyalgia is complicated because it rarely comes from one single problem. Poor sleep, chronic stress, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, digestive problems, infections, and environmental triggers can all play a role.
That is why simply treating pain, fatigue, or brain fog is often not enough. You have to look for the underlying causes that are keeping your body from healing.
Start With Deep, Restorative Sleep
The first place I look is sleep.
Not just how long you are in bed, but whether you are reaching deep, restorative sleep. This is when your body repairs itself, regulates inflammation, clears waste, restores energy, and helps your muscles, brain, hormones, and nervous system recover.
If you are not sleeping deeply, you may wake up exhausted, struggle to think clearly, experience more pain, and feel as though your body is constantly running on empty.
Getting better sleep will not automatically solve every cause of fibromyalgia. But it can improve nearly every symptom and give your body the foundation it needs to start healing.
Your Pain Threshold Matters
Many people with fibromyalgia experience central sensitivity pain syndrome. The nervous system keeps sending pain signals even when it should have turned them down.
At the same time, your pain threshold may be lower than normal, causing ordinary pressure, movement, or touch to feel much more painful.
Serotonin plays an important role in regulating that pain threshold. The higher your healthy serotonin levels are, the better your body may be able to control pain signals.
Your body makes serotonin from nutrients, including the amino acid tryptophan, along with specific vitamins and minerals. This is one reason nutritional deficiencies, poor digestion, and chronic stress can have such a major effect on fibromyalgia symptoms.Your Hormones May Be Running Low
Your stress-coping hormones, including cortisol and DHEA, help your body handle physical and emotional stress.
When those hormones become depleted, you may have less stamina and resilience. Small problems can feel overwhelming, and fibromyalgia flares may become more frequent or severe.
Thyroid hormones are also important. Many people are told their thyroid is normal because their doctor only checked TSH or performed a basic thyroid panel.
But basic tests may miss problems with active T3, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, or the conversion of thyroid hormones. If thyroid function is not properly tested or treated, fatigue, brain fog, low mood, weight gain, and pain may continue.
Vitamin D, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can also affect pain, energy, and overall well-being.
Your Gut and Brain Are Connected
A large percentage of people with fibromyalgia also struggle with irritable bowel symptoms, food sensitivities, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, or other digestive problems.
Your digestive system has to break down food, absorb nutrients, and remove waste. When digestion is not working properly, even a healthy diet may not provide your body with the nutrients it needs.
Poor digestion can contribute to deficiencies in magnesium, B vitamins, amino acids, selenium, essential fatty acids, and other nutrients involved in energy production, thyroid function, sleep, muscle relaxation, and brain chemistry.
Your gut and brain are directly connected. You cannot fully address fibromyalgia while ignoring chronic digestive problems. The Takeaway
Fibromyalgia is not simply a pain disorder, and it is not something you should be told to accept without asking more questions.
Your symptoms are signals.
Are you getting deep, restorative sleep? Are your stress hormones depleted? Is your thyroid being tested thoroughly? Are nutritional deficiencies lowering your pain threshold? Is poor digestion keeping you from absorbing what your body needs?
In this week’s episode, I explain why sleep is the first place I start and how hormones, nutrition, digestion, inflammation, and nervous-system sensitivity can all contribute to fibromyalgia symptoms.
